Free Course on Google: Which Google Certificates Are Actually Free
Google teaches across six separate platforms. Four of them are free including the certificate. One is free to learn but charges for the exam. One isn’t free at all, despite what half the internet tells you.
Here’s the map, priced in pounds, so nothing surprises you at the checkout.

When I say free here, I mean you can finish the credential without ever entering a card.
🏫 Skillshop: start here
Skillshop is Google’s own training platform. Free, self-paced, built by Google product teams, and most tracks end in a proper Google product certification.
Ads, Analytics, Google Marketing Platform, Business Profile. This is where the real free certificates live. If you only ever visit one Google platform, make it this one.
🏅 Digital Garage: the one recruiters know
Digital Garage sits inside Skillshop, and you may well recognise the name, because Google ran Digital Garage training around towns and cities here for years.
Its flagship course, Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, is about 40 hours and ends with an Award for Completion. Free. It’s probably the single most common free credential on marketing CVs, which cuts both ways: it’s recognised, but it doesn’t make you stand out on its own.
📊 Analytics Academy
Google describes Analytics Academy on Skillshop as free e-learning, with a Google Analytics certification at the end. £0.
Best for GA4 foundations and anything measurement-shaped. Shorter than people expect.
💰 Google Ads certifications
Free training and free certification exams across Search, Display, Measurement, Video, Shopping and Apps.
Worth flagging: these turn up by name in job adverts, usually under “desirable”. If you’re applying to an agency or an in-house paid media team, this is the one that gets you shortlisted.
👩💻 Google for Developers
Codelabs are hands-on tutorials where you build something small and real. Learning Pathways string them together with articles, quizzes and videos.
Free, but badges rather than certificates. Think of this as building evidence, not paperwork. For some roles that’s the better trade.
☁️ Cloud Skills Boost
Skill badges and hands-on labs for cloud and AI. Note the split Google makes here: skill badges come from the platform, but Google Cloud certifications need a paid, proctored exam, usually $125 to $200 (£100 to £160 give or take).
Cloud Innovators members get monthly no-cost learning credits, which covers a decent amount of lab time.
🧭 Where Grow with Google fits
Grow with Google is the signpost, not the destination. It’s the umbrella brand, and most of its pages funnel you into Skillshop, Digital Garage or the Career Certificates depending on what you tell it you want. Google ran Grow with Google sessions with libraries and jobcentres, so the branding may look familiar.
⚠️ Career Certificates: the bit people get wrong
The Google Career Certificates (Data Analytics, IT Support, UX Design, Project Management, Cybersecurity, Digital Marketing & E-commerce) live on Coursera. They are not free.
What that actually means:
- Coursera bills monthly, usually £39 to £49, and most people take three to six months
- There’s normally a seven-day free trial
- You can audit a lot of the material for nothing, but the certificate needs the paid track
- Coursera runs a documented financial aid process, reviewed in around 15 days, which can cover the full cost
These are good programmes and employers do recognise them. Just budget for them honestly instead of filing them under “free course on Google”.
📅 A 30-day plan that actually lands
This is the stacking order I’d use if I were applying to agencies tomorrow.
Week 1. Fundamentals of Digital Marketing, the 40-hour one. Eight to ten hours gets you most of the way through. Finish the assessment and claim the award.
Week 2. Google Analytics certification. Beg, borrow or ask nicely for access to a real GA4 property while you do it, even a friend’s small business site. Reading about GA4 and clicking around inside GA4 are not the same skill, and interviewers can tell which one you have.
Week 3. One Google Ads certification. Pick whichever matches the adverts you’re answering. Search is the safe default.
Week 4. Stop collecting certificates and go use one. Take a real local business and write a single page: what you’d try to achieve, who you’d target, how you’d split £500 a month, three versions of the ad copy, and what number would tell you it worked.
Weeks one to three get you through the filter. Week four is the only part anyone will ask you about in the room.
⚠️ Before you start
- Certifications expire. Google Ads ones generally need renewing every 12 months. Put it in your calendar before it quietly lapses on your LinkedIn.
- Use a personal Google account. Certify under a work account and you can lose your own credentials when you change jobs.
- “Google certified” means nothing on its own. Write “Google Ads Search Certification, 2026” instead.
- Don’t call Coursera-hosted certificates free, and don’t call them Skillshop credentials. Different products, different price tags.
- Pound figures are approximate. Google and Coursera bill in dollars or sterling depending on the product.
