🖥️ CS50: the one that’s genuinely free
CS50 is Harvard’s intro to computer science, and it’s the reason “free Harvard certificate” isn’t a myth.
Straight from CS50’s own FAQs:
- The CS50 Certificate is free and issued by CS50 itself
- You earn it by scoring 70% or better on every problem set, lab and the final project
- Nobody asks for a card at any point
There’s also a paid verified certificate on edX, listed by Harvard Online at $219 (call it £170, depending on the day). Two certificates, two issuers, same course. Take the free one and ignore the other.
⏱️ Be realistic about the time. If you’re working full time, this is 10 to 20 weeks at 6 to 10 hours a week. It’s not a weekend job. It is, however, the most respected free credential on this whole list.
Which CS50?
- CS50x is the flagship. Start here.
- CS50P is Python only. Gentler, quicker.
- CS50W, CS50AI and CS50 Cybersecurity come later, once the basics stick.
If you’re changing career into tech from something non-technical, CS50x plus the projects you build along the way beats almost any paid short course on an application.
📚 HarvardX on edX: free to learn, paid to prove it
edX hosts Harvard’s courses under the HarvardX label. The pattern never changes: audit free, pay for the verified certificate.
Verified certificates usually start around $50 (roughly £40) and climb to a few hundred for longer courses. Audit access sometimes locks graded work or expires when the course run ends, so read the course page properly before you start.
💷 If money is the only thing stopping you: edX’s help centre says financial assistance can cut the verified fee by 80% for learners who can show economic hardship. That turns a £170 certificate into about £35. It’s a proper documented process, not a voucher code.
🏛️ Harvard PLL: the official free catalogue
Harvard Professional & Lifelong Learning keeps a Free Courses catalogue with dozens of options across every school. Courses show as “Free*”, and that asterisk means free to access, certificate rules vary by course.
Regulars in the catalogue:
- Justice, the moral and political philosophy course
- Exercising Leadership: Foundational Principles
- Negotiating Salary, which is short and unexpectedly useful
- The Data Science series: R Basics, Probability, Inference
- Public health, government and humanities
That Data Science series is worth a look if you’re headed towards analytics. Pair it with the free tools in my free course data analysis guide and you’ve got something to actually show people.
📄 How to write this on your CV
This bit matters more than people expect, because recruiters do check.
❌ Don’t write: “Studied at Harvard University.”
✅ Do write:
CS50: Introduction to Computer Science, HarvardX (online, completed 2026). Free CS50 Certificate. Final project: [one line on what you built].
That’s accurate, it verifies, and it gives the interviewer something to ask you about. Overclaiming a Harvard link is one of the quickest ways to lose a room in an interview. The honest version already sounds good.
On LinkedIn, put it under Licences & Certifications with CS50 or HarvardX as the issuer, and paste the verification link.
🤔 Is Harvard even the right first move?
Sometimes not. Depends what you’re after.
- Want something funded and tied to a job? A Skills Bootcamp in England is free, runs up to 16 weeks, and ends with a guaranteed interview. Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run their own versions through SDS, Working Wales and the Department for the Economy.
- Want a home-grown certificate today? OpenLearn from the Open University gives you a free statement of participation when you finish.
- Want tool skills employers screen for? The free course on Google route is faster and equally free.
Harvard wins on depth and on a name that travels. It’s the slowest route to a certificate.
➡️ Where to go next
- Practical credentials employers filter on: free course on Google
- Building a marketing CV: free course digital marketing
- The fastest-growing ask on job adverts: free course AI
- Spreadsheets, SQL and dashboards: free course data analysis
⚠️ Things worth knowing before you start
- Check who issues the certificate. “CS50 Certificate” and “Verified Certificate” are different documents from different places.
- Check the deadlines. Some courses run at your own pace, others in fixed sessions with hard cut-offs. CS50 spells its requirements out.
- Keep the proof. Download the PDF, save the verification link, keep the project files. In an interview it’s the project that gets discussed, never the PDF.
- The pound figures here are converted approximations. edX bills in dollars, so your bank’s rate and any non-sterling fee apply on top.
❓ FAQ
Can I really take a Harvard course for free? Yes. Nothing on HarvardX, CS50 or the Harvard PLL free catalogue is geographically restricted.
Is the free CS50 certificate a Harvard qualification? No. It’s a certificate of completion issued by CS50. Not a degree, not credit-bearing. Still well regarded.
How much is the verified CS50 certificate? Harvard Online lists it at $219, about £170. The free CS50 certificate stays available either way.
Do I have to pay to register for CS50 on edX? No. CS50’s FAQ confirms there’s a free audit option with no payment.
Will an employer recognise a HarvardX course? As evidence of self-directed learning, yes. It isn’t a regulated qualification under Ofqual, SQA or CCEA, so call it a course, not a qualification.
Is there help with the paid certificates? Yes. edX’s help centre says financial assistance can reduce the verified fee by 80% for eligible learners.
How long does CS50x take? Three to five months for most people in full-time work, at 6 to 10 hours a week.
Where’s the safest place to browse? Harvard’s PLL Free Courses catalogue and cs50.harvard.edu. Skip anyone reselling access.
