Free Course AI: The AI Courses Worth Doing, and What They Cost

By Alberto Lins

AI is the skill job adverts added fastest. It’s also the worst offender for courses that call themselves free and then ask for a card at the certificate screen.

These are the ones that stay free the whole way through, with the paid bits priced in pounds so you know where the line is.

🎯 The shortlist

IBM SkillsBuild ✅ Credly badges 10–40 hrs Credentials that verify
Google AI (Skillshop/Cloud) ✅ on free platforms 5–20 hrs Practical workplace AI
DeepLearning.AI Varies 1–2 hrs each Actually building with LLMs
Microsoft Learn Badges ✅, AI-900 ~£100–£150 10–20 hrs Microsoft-stack employers

🇫🇮 Elements of AI: start here

Free, about 30 hours across two courses, certificate from a real university.

The University of Helsinki built this with Reaktor for the general public, not for engineers, and over a million people across Europe have taken it. It’s the closest thing to a free university-issued AI certificate that exists.

  • Introduction to AI. What AI is, what it isn’t, how it actually works.
  • Building AI. The follow-on, with more technical detail.

No maths degree needed. It explains the concepts properly instead of hiding behind jargon, which is rarer than it should be.

🔵 IBM SkillsBuild

Free, with digital credentials issued through Credly.

That Credly bit matters more than it sounds. A Credly badge is a link an employer clicks and confirms, rather than a PDF you could have made in Canva. Most free certificates can’t offer that.

Start with AI Fundamentals and Artificial Intelligence Foundations.

🔴 Google AI Essentials

Free on Google’s own platforms. Not free on Coursera.

Check which version you’ve landed on. Skillshop and Cloud Skills Boost content costs nothing. The Coursera listing sits behind the subscription, roughly £39 to £49 a month, with a trial and financial aid available.

Google Cloud Skills Boost also runs free generative AI paths with hands-on labs and skill badges, which is where the actual practice happens.

🟩 Microsoft Learn

Learning free. Exams not.

The AI Fundamentals path maps to the AI-900 certification. Training costs nothing, the exam runs £100 to £150. Given how much of the public sector and mid-market runs on Microsoft, AI-900 is one of the few paid AI exams that turns up by name in job adverts.

Do the free path first. Sit the exam only when an employer asks.

🧠 DeepLearning.AI and AWS

DeepLearning.AI short courses, built with Andrew Ng, are free and genuinely good if you want to build with LLMs rather than just talk about them. Usually one to two hours each. Prompt engineering, RAG, agents, evaluation.

AWS Skill Builder has a free tier with hundreds of courses including generative AI foundations. Deeper labs and the certification exams are paid.

💼 What employers actually mean by “AI skills”

Two completely different things get called AI skills on job adverts, and they lead to different courses.

AI literacy. Using AI tools well in a non-technical job. Marketing, HR, operations, admin, legal, public sector. This is the much bigger category and it’s growing faster. Elements of AI plus Google’s practical training covers it, free.

AI engineering. Building with models, fine-tuning, RAG, deployment. Needs Python and real maths. DeepLearning.AI plus the data route is the honest path.

Almost everyone searching for a free AI course wants the first one. Start there. Move to the second only if you find you enjoy it.

💷 The funded route

AI and data Skills Bootcamps in England are free to eligible adults, run up to 16 weeks, and end with a guaranteed job interview. They appear in the GOV.UK catalogue regularly, delivered by colleges and specialist providers.

Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland run equivalents through Skills Development Scotland, Working Wales and the Department for the Economy. The National Careers Service does a free skills assessment first, worth doing before you commit to anything long.

Eligibility depends on age, residency, employment status and prior qualifications. GOV.UK, not a provider’s advert.

📅 30 days to credible AI literacy

Week 1. Elements of AI, Introduction to AI. Six to eight hours. You now understand what the technology is and where it breaks.

Week 2. Google’s practical AI training. Prompting, workplace use, responsible use. Another six hours.

Week 3. IBM SkillsBuild AI Fundamentals. Claim the Credly badge, because it verifies publicly.

Week 4. Apply it to your actual job. Pick one repetitive task in your current or target role and document how you’d use AI on it. What you automated, what you checked by hand, what you wouldn’t let it near, and what it saved you.

Week four is the whole difference. Anyone can list three AI certificates. Very few candidates can sit in an interview and describe a real process they improved, including the parts where they decided not to trust the model.

⚠️ Things that catch people out

  • Check the platform before you start. The same Google course is free on Skillshop and paid on Coursera.
  • Free trial isn’t free. DataCamp, Coursera and others advertise AI courses on trials that convert.
  • Certification exams are separate. Microsoft AI-900 and the AWS AI certifications cost money even when every hour of training is free.
  • Be careful what you paste into AI tools at work. Data protection law applies to personal data you feed a third party model, and most employers now have a policy on it. Don’t learn this one on a live dataset.
  • Don’t oversell it. “Completed Elements of AI, University of Helsinki” is accurate and respectable. “AI specialist” after 30 hours is not.

❓ FAQ

Best genuinely free AI course? Elements of AI from the University of Helsinki. Free, 30 hours, certificate from a real university, no prerequisites.

Is Google AI Essentials free? Depends where you take it. Google’s own Skillshop and Cloud Skills Boost content is free. The Coursera version needs the paid subscription.

Do I need to code? Not for AI literacy. Elements of AI, Google’s training and IBM SkillsBuild all work without programming. Engineering roles do need Python.

Are IBM SkillsBuild certificates worth anything? They’re free and issued as verifiable Credly badges, which puts them ahead of most free certificates. Treat them as evidence of learning, not as a qualification.

Is Microsoft AI-900 free? The training is. The exam costs roughly £100 to £150.

Are there funded AI courses? Yes, AI and data Skills Bootcamps in England plus devolved equivalents. Eligibility on GOV.UK.

How long before AI skills help my CV? About four weeks part-time for credible literacy, plus one documented example of applying it.

Which AI certificate do employers recognise? Non-technical roles: Elements of AI and Google’s training. Microsoft-stack employers: AI-900. Engineering: your GitHub matters more than any certificate.

Disclaimer

I’m not affiliated with the University of Helsinki, Google, IBM, Microsoft, AWS, DeepLearning.AI or any government department. AI catalogues change faster than anything else on this site, so availability, certificate rules, exam fees, funding eligibility and pricing all move, and conversions are approximate.
